Storm Cellar Creative

Kevin and I had the pleasure to create these designs for our friend out in the big whirlwind of chaos that is Los Angeles.
He has a production company that, as their name implies, would prefer to stay underground and safe from the destruction happening above.

We, being very familiar with the wide open spaces of Kansas were perfect candidates to put together the look for Storm Cellar. We created a grungy and worn look with earthen tones and allusions to wide open spaces. The heavy cellar door closes and locks one away hidden inside.

Amanda's Last Week in Haiti

For over a month, my great friend Amanda Kane has been in Port a Prince, Haiti working as a nurse in a children's clinic/tent.

I am just so proud of her, I wanted to boast about the work the Lord is doing through her. Please visit her blog at:

Here, she has wonderful stories of the children in her care along with stories of their families. My favorite is "Happy Kids and Happy Me!" "Spicy Peanut Butter" gives a good description of what her days look like. "Children's Precious Prayers" tells of how the recovering kids are praying for each other and their individual updates.

Amanda's stories help let us far from all the chaos know how people are living and their needs. For instance, most families are living in sheet tents and rainy season has already hit the area hard--"Rain Rain Go Away"

Amanda recalls stories of parents desperately bringing their children to the clinic because they are unable to provide for the little ones. Happily after just a short time, these same parents learn about our Heavenly Father's provision, and the once desperate mothers are asking for their children to come home once they've recovered. The volunteers were able to send this family home with tarps, ropes, and duct tape; supplies that will help make a more comfortable temporary home.

Not only are the children receiving physical therapy and treatment for their broken bones and amputations and all sorts of other conditions, they are learning about Jesus and how he wants to make them into new creations and to give them his heart.

I hope that these stories give you hope and pride for Haiti like they have for me.

Best Kid's Design of 2009!

Just got the word that "Dandy Lions" was voted Best Kid's Design of 2009 from the Threadless.com community!

This, I must say, is a very prestigious honor! So many designs are submitted and voted on every year at Threadless and just getting printed was HUGE, but then to be a Bestee, aww shucks, THAT'S AWESOME!!!

Kevin did the math and calculated that about 520 new shirts get printed every year. The community voted and chose "Dandy Lions" as their favorite kid's tee out of so many great designs.

So thank you to those that have voted for my designs and those of you who have requested a reprint. Thank you to those who have bought a shirt for yourself! You all have been so good to me.

The Trinity of ThreeHouse is Born

Friday marked the ThreeHouse trinity birth. We are officially Media, Studio, and Gallery all in one. Here are some images from our first show on Friday. It was a big success. So many people came and joined us. Walls all around the city are displaying Jeremy's art. And my brownies were a hit!

The last three weeks have been crazy with moving in, finishing up animation and design work, and totally changing the face of this space. It felt really great to have so many people filling our new gallery space on First Friday. ThreeHouse is getting legit fo' real!

Planet, People, Prosperity Style Boards

These are the boards for ThreeHouse's latest animation, Phoenix International's animated Holiday card. This shipping company has clients all over the world and wants their season's greetings to be universal. They have three pillars that they want to present within the card: Planet, People, and Prosperity. These P's are what they stand for as a company and wish to spread the word all over the world.

Kevin spread his wings directing the design for this project. I did my best to recreate his vision within the boards. The animation portion will start next week. It's going to be a bit tricky with the bear on the bike, but we love creating these challenges for ourselves. This has the potential of being one of our best pieces to date.

I'm so happy that Kevin and I could help our friends of Paragon Aerial Silks with their logo and business cards. These girls are super talented. They also have incredible upper body strength for their petit frames. I'm proud of this group and their ambition to set the bar in Kansas City and beyond for aerial fabric performance.

The final logo was designed by Kevin, and I'll give it to him. He's admires a smart logo and is improving with each project.

Tarkus Attacks! Poster

I'm pretty excited about this poster that came through last minute for my buddies in Tarkus Attacks! Nate and Chris had been asking Kevin and I to do a poster for their band for a while, and they needed time to promote. So I sat down with nothing but bad ideas yesterday morning and by the time it was dark enough to watch the meteor shower, I had come up with this little number. The great white shark is in tribute to my friend Chris Bohatyritz who, while in South Africa's False Bay on the way out in a speed boat to Seal Island, had held his shark brochure out with the childhood hopes of seeing this great beast breach the water. Chris, someday, we'll make it out there again, and we won't leave until we see that devil jump.

It's been awhile since I have taken a book binding class with Mr. Carl Kurtz, book binding prodigious perfectionist, but I had the itch. As a part of Art for Africa fundraising, I found a few vintage children's textbooks on ebay, gutted them and added sketchbook paper inside. Each book's pages were hand sewn together making the "signatures" of the book. I sliced the uneven edges with a guillotine paper cutter, making them perfectly trimmed.

These are images from just two of the books that were rebound and converted into sketchbooks.

Kevin's best man, Chad Somers, recently graduated from Liberty University with a Bachelor Degree in Music with an emphasis in vocal performance. The least we could to for our good ol' friend was to use our talents to support his. He's an opera singer! This past weekend he made Kevin and me omelets and got us lost hiking in the woods down by the river. We love him and the rest of the Somers family, and his chubby pup Patience (I hope she's not reading this). African American Museum in Philadelphia

Here are some images from a project that Kevin and I just finished with a local design firm, Eisterhold and Associates. We animated projected images that overlay cutout images of the important figures in African American History. There are six sections narrating the history of culture, work, law, politics, religion, and family for these early Philadelphians. This wall of images is 60 feet long. It's huge!

About 58 False Killer Whales beached themselves on Long Beach about 10 minutes from where the team was staying. A van took about 22 of our team to the site where they hit the ground running toward the water to help the whales. Everyone was baffled as to how these creatures ended up here and why they kept swimming back to shore after they were put out to water.
Witnessing this was completely unreal. It was so sad watching the scared and worn out whales struggling. About 15 were saved.

Red Hill, a township which was largely destroyed in a fire last year. The rebuild opened doors for the All Nations team to come in and help rebuild. Now there homes are further apart, allowing room for personal gardens.

My husband and I just made it back from our honeymoon in Italy last night. We've heard that there were some people who were worried about us and the earthquakes. Fortunately, we were well clear of them, and hadn't even heard of the earthquakes until my mom had contacted us worried to death. So, thank you for your well wishes. We had an amazing and safe time in a beautiful land. However, we returned to our new home looking like the rubble of an earthquake. It's a lot of work moving and getting married in the same week.

This whole getting married thing has been a roller coaster ride of anticipation up hill for the past 5 months, and the wedding and the honeymoon has been the fast and steep hill down. It was so fun! I really can't describe how amazing our wedding day was, or how lucky we've felt having such a beautiful day and a beautiful trip to start our marriage. No freak snow storm could ruin our day.

These are our save-the-dates made like the Victorian Era toy called the Thaumatrope, an early form of animation entertainment. Our silhouettes were on each side and when the strings are twisted, it looks like we're kissing and the rings interlock. You have to make the kissing sounds yourself.

4 more days before I'm a Howdeshell! Kevin's working on the programs right now. Of course, he's working hard on making even the program special. I admire him, but I refuse to do anymore screen printing before the wedding. This is an image of the invitations in progress, and our final mailed product, inside and out. We used a small screen printing machine called a Gocco. For the invites we printed twice on each card, once for each color.

And to crazy up our lives more, Kevin and I are working on a project for the African American Museum in Philadelphia. These are the first clients that Kevin and I have brought into Threehouse. This time we're not mooching off of Jeremy.

Three-house.com is also coming soon. This whole studio thing is happening. 2009 is a huge year already: marriage, Italy for the honeymoon, Three-house.com, and South Africa for Jesus. Promise, we won't be the same for 2010.

Dandy Lion Submission to Threadless

Kevin and I are in the process of raising money for a mission trip to Cape Town, South Africa. We along with our team of 9 others are leaving in May for Cape Town, going to disciple to those in the poorest of poor villages surrounding the city. We're teaming up with an established and long-term group called All Nations, and together will help train new leaders from those village communities in how to start home churches. I'm going with the confidence in seeing God work in crazy, miraculous ways. I'm expecting to see amazing healing that can only be attributed to God's amazing power. I'm expecting to witness people desperate for jobs find work. I'm expecting the Holy Spirit's movement all over that city.

So this design along with another from Kevin have helped us gain attention for this trip. We held one fundraising event last Saturday called Art for Africa. We held a silent auction, selling walls full of original art and tables full of hand printed tote bags and cards and earrings and all sorts of stuff. The bake sale was busy all night along with the latte bar. I wasn't surprised. Kevin makes the best lattes in the world. If you haven't had one, you need to come over and have him whip up one just for you.

I'll update you on more fundraising events that are going to be happening soon. But in the mean time, you can always vote for my Threadless submission. Prize money from that would most definitely fund our tickets!

The story of my Wendy's painting made it into the Kansas City star last Friday. The story was pretty good, and I'm glad that my painting was in color, but the picture of me was so ugly. The Wendy's Results are In!

This past May, I was truly blessed to participate in the "My Wendy's, My Way" art contest. The commission was to portray the spirit of my city, Kansas City, involving the little cutie in red braids. Wendy's went on a "Taste Tour" in 23 cities all over the country in which an artist from the city was commissioned to art. Then the first prize winner of all the entries would receive a $25,000 grand prize! This was an opportunity that I couldn't pass up even though I was busy at the time with finishing my senior thesis film and trying to graduate.

My entry portrays Kansas City as a city that is growing and is being beautified by the individuals that are spreading their hope for our city. More specifically, the tulips in the composition are a symbol of dreams, work, and growth inspired by the Tulips on Troost project started by Durwin Rice. This project has set a goal of planting one-million tulips along the historic street of Troost in order to rebrand the street as one that is cared for and beautiful--The Tulip Street. The children that are growing up on Troost now will hopefully remember their neighborhood for the Tulips and not for its rougher moments. This past week, I was invited to fly to Dublin, Ohio, the hometown of Wendy's, as one of the 3 finalists! This was such an honor and the finally of a long waiting period. When the results were heard, I came in third. I'm very pleased and feel privileged to have been selected in such a high standing. I've had a lot of support and interest from my friends here who always root for me, so thank you all.

My painting will remain on exhibit in the Wendy's headquarters in Dublin.

In Need of a Band for this Poster

A couple of months ago, Kevin was inspired and drew this fabulous poster design. This week, I wiped the dust off of it and worked on its digit coloring. I'm excited about the psychedelic look. It makes me happy, and its another collaboration piece that Kevin and I can add to our pile.

I took the approach of layering texture after texture over flat areas of color like his hair. I also wanted to keep the beautiful sketch quality of line work that Kevin left me. The result still is a finished drawing, but the lines still have some livelihood, where Kevin sometimes battles strenuously and meticulously shaping and retracing each line. Then after all the attention that he'd put into the drawing, the lines would be suffocated, much like a helicopter mom and her child. When I started the coloring process, some guide lines where still there in the guitar and tie. The bird had three beaks. The pegs where just sketches. They were so beautiful, the coloring had to compliment that looseness.

So if your band is in need of a poster, and you have a front man who has a long brown beard, this poster might have been destined to have your name on it.

American Royal Barbecue contest Poster

So, for the past three years, the American Royal Barbecue Contest Poster Contest (can that get more convoluted?) has given me a fantastic excuse to illustrate a poster in the hopes that I'd win a $500 scholarship. This is my final entry, considering that I am a senior, and I think that it was my most successful. Yet, with each entry, I fall short of the glorious cash, and all I’m left with is a sweet portfolio piece. So, I’m adding this poster to my pile of contest losers, joining my Harrah’s illustration and the BBQ poster from last year.

Oh, my favorite detail is the chef in paril being grasped by the giant cow. He's so cute!

Good news though, about a month ago, I found out that my jr. film, “Alejandro”, was accepted in the Philadelphia Film Festival. I can’t seem to upload animations to this page, but if you’re interested, search my name on youtube.com to view the full animation.

New Poster

Well, it's not really new, as you can tell by the dates. This was a poster for the animation end of semester show. I just wanted to make a poster that people would want to steal. I printed this using the Vandercook press in printmaking. Not enough people use that thing. If it weren't 700lbs, I'd walk away with it. Although, I'd also have to steal all the type drawers weighing propably another 1000lbs. aww, shoot.

I made this book in my printmaking elective last semester. All the pages were printed from woodblocks. The text was added by xerox transfer--a real pain in the butt process. It's real pretty though.

Love it! We finally finished our build with the living room and another puppet, Milton, the adorable son. It paid off to work over winter break, and our class presentation of our progress went very well, and I was so proud that Kevin and I had finished. We are finishing up the lighting for the first shot now. Lighting is something that we do not have any experience with and it is kicking our butts, but we should be animating in a day.

My Red Sketchbook: Blind contours

I started this book right before I went on Christmas break. Coffee shop trips and winter intersession classes helped fill this up so far. These blind contours are really loosening up my drawings and helping me see better when I draw. That's kindof important.

New Poster, "Playing with the Boys"

This is a poster that I created for the Harrah's Casino "Night at Harrah's" advertising campaign that was canvassing for a local artist to create an image for a 90 by 90 foot space on a Main St. building side. The winner, in addition to the huge canvas that would be viewed by thousands of people on a daily basis, would win $10,000! That's a lot of money, and I'm sure that I would spend it wisely. There were just over 50 entries, and sadly, the top ten were very dissapointing to me. Seven of ten of them were images that I could have pulled from a stock illustration book. I don't want to be too bitter, so I won't go into detail. I would like to think that there is a reason that I haven't won a contest yet. I'm happy for the winner, a girl that I didn't know. Winning the contest sure made her night. Anyway, I designed an art deco piece to fit with the feel of our new down town. "Playing with the Boys" depicts a young woman and several meanings. She is the center of attention to not only us as the viewers on Main Street, but also the audience of gentlemen who have come to watch, impressed by her play. With her large stack of chips, we can assume that she is doing well at the table making her even more attractive on this night. Lastly, I subtly placed two kings around an ace on the table. With those boys on the table and the smirk on her face, we can only wonder what boys she might be hiding in her hand. In all, I designed this poster with an attractive style that would be appeal to all, making this game of intellect and chance a glamorous game, but not too intimidating. The attire of the characters evokes a nighttime feel: a night out. The suits and her sleek dress remind me of New Year's with a warm glow from the lights. The woman paying more attention to her cards then her visitors, exudes confidence in every aspect of her play.

Introducing Ireland

This past semester, I've been working on my thesis film, "A Very Hairy Christmas," with two classmates, Regina Weller and Kevin Howdeshell. This is the father character, Ireland, who is dressed in his work overalls ready to hang the Christmas lights on the trees of his small town set in the late 1940's. Thanks to the knowledgable people at Shadowmachine Films, with whom I interned for along with Regina and Kevin, I have learned the basics of stop motion puppet building. Ireland is some evidence of what I learned out there in L.A. If you are unfamiliar, Shadowmachine Films is the studio resposible for creating Robot Chicken, the show that I helped with, and Moral Orel, both aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

School is so close, I smell it already.

I'm here right now in St. Louis visiting Kevin's family and peeps. L.A.'s got nothin on this heat. It's been over 100 for the past week, and that's not even including the humidity which brings it up to a nice, healthy 107 or so. The two of us are driving back to K.C. tomorrow. The dorms are calling us. Then school starts on the 27th. I'm looking forward to the new begining: reorganizing my room, starting a new animation, my printmaking elective, seeing good friends again, getting back into my capoeira routine--which we have a 45 minute show in the ethnic festival in Loose Park this upcoming Sunday. This will be my first show since I had to cut back capoeira for L.A. I've missed it so much! So at this performance, we'll have Afro-Brazilian dancing, maculele (a fight dance with machettes or sticks, it's a crowd favorite), Brazilian music, and capoeira.

Leaving L.A.

It's so sad leaving L.A., but Kansas City is calling, and so are my parents. This summer was absolutely fabulous, and I'm missing everybody already.
As for the images, these are some sculpts that I did during last semester, and a sketch from a trip to the zoo. The doll on his back is a capoeira character that I designed with the intention of using him in an illustration doing a jumping kick. His name is Peru, meaning turkey in Portugeuse. It's a tradition in capoeira to give nicknames to people when they recieve their first belt. The other character is Alejandro who is the star in my junior year animation. He's quite the handsome young hero, ready to sweep any woman off of her tush. The gorilla is from a day at the zoo with my sketchbook.

This is my first blog entry. Yeah, for me! I'll start off with some older work. These are illustrations from the last two years while I've been at school. The figure was from a sophomore drawing class. I had just learned of Egon Shiele and studied his loose and exaggerated figures. If the drawing reflects that, is another thing. The Secret Police comic cover was done for a character design class. The Secret Police is a group that I created with the help of a classmate, Ian Gamble. They are entities that watch mischivious children like an extra set of eyes for parents. They are responsible for cluing parents in on their children's secrets. Oh, and my beloved American Royal Barbeque Contest poster, that was never seen by the public. It lost the very sad and dissapointing race to be the poster chosen to advertise this anual event. The judges thought that the chicken looked too much like Bart Simpson. Oh, those judges. They get me everytime.
